Still Breathing | How A Rapper from Queens is Giving New Life to a Classic Trap Sound
The Birth of “Type Beats”
If you were a big “Soundcloud” person anywhere from 2013 til 2017, the odds of you stumbling across a MexikoDro or StoopidXool beat and hearing the word “PLUG” were very much in your favor. Artists like Playboi Carti, UnotheActivist and Rich the Kid might not be where they are today because of these “type” beats. Even though Drake recently released a Mixtape with a MexikoDro beat on it, this kind of sound has noticably regressed over the past few years.
How The “Type Beat” Game Has Changed
As most avid hip hop heads will tell you, it is fairly difficult to bring back a sound from the dead, or at least one that’s on life support. Don’t tell that to one particular youngin’ out of Hollis, Queens however; as he is slowly but surely starting to generate some buzz.
Flee Ghost Is Bringing The Sound Back To Life
Working with producers such as Cash Cobain and the afore mentioned StoopidXool, “FLEE” or “Flee Ghost” is revitalizing this formally popular trap sound. The sound I’m referring to is a medium to semi fast paced beat including bouncy 808’s and chord-y bell-y instruments to complement it in the background. Pair these fire beats with FLEE, whose flow is just as smooth as the beats they’re paired with, and you have brought new life to this kind of sound; Right here in New York.
For a quick taste of what they’re serving up, check out songs like “Mobb Deep” or “Big Poppa” on YouTube right now that are guaranteed not to disappoint if you appreciate a good sound. If you want to get to his biggest hit so far, one of his latest songs called “Swish/Used To” is generating BIG numbers on YouTube right now thanks to a dope video, a fire sound and a not-so-lowkey feature from Brent Faiyaz. It is hands down the catchiest song of 2020 so far to me. I’ve been bumping it repetitively since it dropped…no joke.
I’m going to wrap this all up just by saying this: If you’re breaking the social distancing laws right now and have a few friends over to chill, smoke and drink, throw some FLEE on the AUX for the vibe. It’s the sound that the games been missing and odds are, the sound you’re missing out on too.
