GSM Stevoo | A Musician Who’s Gifted, Situated, And Motivated
GSM Stevoo is a musician who, as his friends put it, makes soul music for the trenches. In a full-bodied register, GSM Stevoo goes in-depth about staying ten toes down, having a small circle, remaining focused, and getting to the bag. Themes also revolve around addressing phonies, haters, and shedding light on his upbringing. “When I write my music, I usually focus on where I came from in comparison to where I am now,” GSM Stevoo adds, “If not that, then I’m writing based on my current mood. Sometimes I’m in my feelings and talk about my love life. Sometimes I bring out the savage side. When I freestyle, I always speak upon how I’m feeling at the moment.” No matter the song, you can expect to relate in some way.
In short, GSM Stevoo shows listeners that he’s determined to make an impact within the rap industry. Instead of excessively bragging about materialistic things, he opts to rap about real-life occurrences. “When listening to my projects or singles, I expect you to relate in some way or, at least, picture what it’s like to feel the way I feel about certain things,” he adds.
His latest song, “How We Rock,” gives listeners something to resonate with. The song sees GSM Stevoo singing over a trap-like beat full of piano loops, open hi-hats, and snares. Between lyrics, GSM Stevoo calls out individuals who claim that they’re “about that life.” As the song continues, the artist admits to being wary regarding forming new platonic and romantic relationships. Still, he gives respect to those he keeps close, saying they never switched-up on him and always have his back.
GSM Stevoo’s stage name derives from his government name, Stevon. “The homies call me Stevo Two O’s for separation from other Stevoo’s on earth,” he adds. The GSM part stands for Gifted Situated and Motivated. Stevoo says it was made up by a group of him and his friends. “It just described our character.”
When creating a new song, GSM Stevoo says the beat helps to create the concept. If he’s writing, he’ll freestyle the rhymes in his head. Depending on the beat, GSM Stevoo lets the rhyme scheme determine if he makes the hook or verse first. Then, he’ll keep flowing until it makes the most sense. One skill he finds pride in is the ability to be versatile. “I can feature with anyone and change up my themes and flows,” he states. One line he loves is from his song, “Lay Low” on Focused. He raps, “They don’t wanna see you shining this is they show, that’s the reason I lay low.”
Moving forward, GSM Stevoo will be pushing singles, making visuals, connecting with his fans, and performing (once COVID-19 loosens its grip on America).
