Denz | ‘The Chef’, Breaking in the Kitchen
Denz, an Egyptian rapper from Montreal, faced an extremely common dilemma for many college students. Do I finish college and get a degree, or do I put it all on the line for a chance to chase my dream? “The Chef” is Denz’s answer to that question. Denz would not cave under the pressure of those insisting that a career as a rapper is a pipe dream, and that he sacrifice his dreams for the comfort of a safety net.
Denz has only been making music for about a year, however, he has been writing since the age of 15, and it definitely shows. He’s extremely comfortable on the beat, unafraid to switch up both his delivery and rhyme scheme mid-verse, sometimes simultaneously, demonstrating a polished pen game, and maybe some time spitting to the welcoming audience of his bathroom mirror.
Denz’s metallic, sliding-door vocals come across extremely clearly, and while there is work to be done on the enunciation front, that’s to be expected from an artist with only a year of experience. If Denz could pair increased enunciation with an injection of modulation and emotion into his sometimes static vocals, there is serious potential for this young artist. Additionally, Denz doesn’t throw out any tired punchlines. There is no “going up like an elevator,” or “gonna explode like a bomb,” or any of that platitudinous garbage.
“cooking like a chef, I’m on Ramsey’s level with a pencil”
I love the creativity, and I love the originality.
Hard work beats talent any day of the week. The problem with many aspiring rappers is that they don’t have to internal motivation necessary to refine their craft repeatedly; to fail over and over again. Henry Kissinger once said: “a diamond is just a chunk of coal that did well under pressure.” We all start out as coal, and the formula to succeed is simple. It’s not magic; its diligence and dedication, and I have no doubt that the well-spoken Denz has willpower to fail his way to success.
“I feel like my purpose in life is to invest in myself so I can help others…If I eat, my whole team is eating, and even people who don’t eat at my table.”
The people with the most perseverance are the ones who are fighting firstly not for themselves, but for the ones they love.
Drawing on his values and character, Denz has committed to the musical path, and the Rap Fiesta squad is looking forward to seeing if he can excel under pressure and emerge as a diamond.
