Markie. B | ‘Not no Crisis‘
Markie. B, recording artist out of Orange County, California, is clearly contributing to the heat wave out west with his most recent single, “Not no Crisis.” Written and recorded by Markie, and produced by his homie Vlonely, “Not no Crisis” effectively utilizes a variety of interesting and hypnotic elements that make for a powerful yet relaxing record. Though the song is a quick listen, coming in at just under two minutes and thirty seconds, it effectively creates a memorizing and atmospheric sonic space that leaves listeners wishing it didn’t end.
Vlonely sets the tone nicely from the start, choosing instrumentational elements that really light up the listener’s ear drums. Mainly comprised of grand piano voiced chord structures, along with quick guitar licks and spacey pad elements, there’s a lot to love about this beat. The drums then drop with a slappin’ 808, along with well chosen percussive elements that feel natural and glue the beat together nicely. Markie then compliments the production throughout the record with a mix of melodic and chromatic type vocal lines that positively subdues listeners into a spacey trance. He weaves through lyrics and top-lines with an overarching alternative feel, and creates an aura around this record which is mystical and transcendental.
Overall, we found this record to be unique and admirable, as Markie is clearly pushing the boundaries within his own artistic creativity. After we heard the record, we at Rap Fiesta wanted to get to know a little more about Markie and his backstory. Markie. B, who’s real name is Markus, picked up the “Markie” in his alias due to friends and family coining the nickname. As for the “B,” Markie replied: “It’s cause I’m a beast.” We’d agree with that one, Markie. When asked about how this track came about, he replied:
“…honestly what inspired me was just a vibe of pure love, a vibe where this world of manipulation, greed, and power faded away and there was no crisis in my head. I wanted the people who listened to this track to just be given a breath of fresh air and feel the same energy…”
Listening to Markie’s inspiration for the song gave it a new context that proved to be enlightening after going back and listening again. Although artists might have a particular intention for what a song means at the time of writing and recording, oftentimes, listeners will gather their own different interpretations of a record to have it make sense to themselves within their own lives. Combining our interpretation of the record with Markie’s explanation really allowed us to appreciate the art that much more. As for Markie’s backstory for creating music and his next moves, he went on to say:
“I been making music for five years but I’m at my peak performance currently and I stay improving steady… Next moves gone be more summer vibes and Imma get some videos up on YouTube… [I’m} tryna incorporate some trend worthy material for Tiktok and I’m just steady movin’ …”
We’re looking forward to see what the future has in store for Markie. We at Rap Fiesta are fans, and are excited to see how his future moves play out in the near future. If you haven’t stopped reading this article to listen to “Not no Crisis” yet, we suggest you do so now!
