Teeze | ‘MediTape’, An Authentically Handcrafted Project
Sheesh, get ready for a whirlwind. Teeze is an artist, extremely talented producer, and multi-instrumentalist out of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. His recent tape ‘MediTape’ is composed entirely of his exquisite production and most definitely ooze a Tom Misch aura. The project is beautifully pieced together and has clever intricacies weaved within that might go over many listener’s heads. Here at Rap Fiesta, we appreciate the thoughtfulness in Teeze’s choice of track selection. He unpacks the ‘MediTape’ with ‘Sunrise’ for the intro and wisely closes the tape with ‘Sunset’. We can surely appreciate that reflective approach. The tape includes a plethora of talented artists gracing the Dutchman’s sweet-sounding beats in a cohesive fashion.
How one producer can cultivate a project that embodies over 17 vocalists in complete synergy is beyond us. Clearly, it is not a feat too grand for Teeze. The project is woven with an insane amount of minute elements that tie beautifully together to pack a bright punch. From the depths of the skits to the bright-lofi energy, all the way to the transitions between tracks make for a delightful listen from cover to cover. There is a ton of jazz influence bleeding through the canvas & its blend within Hip-Hop is refreshing. The track that sums up all these elements clearly is ‘What’s Da Vision?’ with saxophone melodies vibrating in the horizon, female vocals glazing the background & hard-hitting rap verses to give it cross-over appeal. Teeze’s beats are truly a wonder & will be impossible to get sick of. On ‘Peanut Butter & Honey’, you’ll feel like your frolicking through a rose-filled field without a care in the world. This is the type of mood you’ll be placed in, so if you’re not ready to relax and enjoy the life you might want to re-think this project. There is a lot of value to be gained across the board, and although Teeze mainly makes his mark on the production side- you’ll be lucky enough to hear crisp vocals on the hook of ‘Peanut Butter & Honey’.
We wanted to know what sparked this gifted-chord playing, LoFi-beat making talent to dive into the realm of music, and Teeze was kind enough to provide Rap Fiesta with some insight.
As a fat baby, my dad introduced me to the music I love and aspire to make myself nowadays. This ranges from Erykah Badu, to Q-Tip, to Raphael Saadiq and many many different flavors. I’ve always been intrigued by chords and certain progressions. My biggest drive in music is to seek what is not made yet, but still letting it have a relatable feeling. My surroundings fed my imagination and I started experimenting. When I turned 16, my dad gave me an interface for my birthday and I started playing around with GarageBand. Immediately I started listening to music with a much more critical ear. The songs had elements that stood out to me more than before and I was starting to recognize how my favorite songs were built. Soon I started to implement that new knowledge into my beats, and besides that, I was on YouTube day in day out either digging for samples or learning something new about a plug-in for example. YouTube is such a strong source. Around when I was 6 years [old], I picked up the guitar. From then on I was teaching myself to play the piano through YouTube as well, and (believe it or not) taking singing lessons for a few years. My drive to learn music as a whole was growing by the day. My mom played saxophone when she was younger, but recently it was collecting dust under a bed, so I decided to start experimenting with that as well.
With the ability to find inspiration in any moment, and the skillset to create sonically smooth melodies in a pin-drops notice, Teeze has the pre-requisites for a star-studded future. His international background also seems to have played a great influence in his artistic growth, as his music seems to pull elements from every atmosphere. His artist name is unique & catchy, and he was kind enough to fill us in on its creation,
This is a funny one actually. My legal name is Ties, and in Dutch this is pronounced ‘Tees’ kinda. So when I came to New York last summer after graduating high-school, every person would read out my name as an English speaking person would. I had to explain my name was not a piece of cloth people tie around their necks when they dress up properly. I decided that my artist name should be close to me so I came up with the name Y.T. These are my initials reversed, but I wasn’t properly convinced yet. As we released our first single of the album ‘Kick Back’…I was ready to submit the song but the distribution platform wouldn’t let me use Y.T. For some reason. On the spot, I decided to rock with Teeze and it has been a good experience lacking miss-pronunciations of my name.
Innovative spontaneity seems to be all around for the young creator, and with his decision to attend music production school in London & his experiences working in New York at recording studios- it seems he’s on a great path. There is no doubt in our mind that this won’t be the first time you hear of Teeze, he’s got a lot more in store & we’re excited for the world to hear it.
