Zo-G | “High”, Mellow Southern Trap Banger
Dayton, Ohio native Zo-G is making major noise with the release of his latest single, “High”. Produced by Jus Deno, this laid-back track is the latest release following his recent 2020 EP, ‘Courtesy of Human Error’ which features funky hits like “Safe” & “Bout Me?”. 2020 has been a challenging year for many but it appears Zo-G has remained hard at work. He’s been making music for about 10 years now, but over the last 2, he’s put a greater focus on it. As the saying goes, “there’s no time like the present,” and Zo-G has arrived, bearing gifts.
Released on September 17th, “High” is a mellow track with hypnotizing vocals, a southern trap feel, and excellent 808 utilization. Even though today’s independents’ have an immense array of professional software and quality sound equipment at their disposal and the mixing/mastering process has become somewhat simplified, putting a song together start to finish is no small feat. Consumers and fans see the finished product, but behind every song is an entire creative process with countless hours of work and studio time.
At first glance, “High” may seem like just another laid back track about smoking and hanging out but there’s a bit beyond the surface, lyrically and sonically. To be clear, “High” isn’t about a sole love affair with cannabis. The songs details the “natural high” one gets from being in Love and enjoying time spent with those we love. Finding that special someone is something most people crave and music is often the perfect creative outlet to express one’s feelings. When asked about the inspiration for the “High” record, Zo-G was quite blunt about it saying the idea centered around smoking and spending quality time with his woman. Zo-G talks about the inspiration for the song noting:
“…was smoking a lot…and being with my lady. Being high, romantically, is essentially dope.” – Zo-G
If you’re into deep bass and pronounced mid-tones, “High” is a track for you. The depth of the 808 balances nicely with calming vocals, bringing energy to the track without overpowering Zo-G’s melodic flow. Zo-G and his engineering unit do an excellent job of making sure his 808’s stand out & hit smoothly. “High” is definitely a record that should be played at high volume to truly unpack the richness of Zo-G’s artistic creativity. The best qualities of life are kicking back care-free and enjoying the time with people you cherish, and Zo-G displays that mantra in a unique-hitting banger.
Zo shows no signs of slowing down and is back in the studio working on his upcoming mixtape, “Project M.U.L.A”, with release plans set for early December.
