Pistol Pete | “The Sweep”, Kansas City’s Official Album
Kansas City rhymist Pistol Pete polished up an authentic rap album with the release of “The Sweep”. The 12-track album was synthesized with professionalism & skits, intros, and transitions that pop. It’s easy to see that he’s a visionary. In the same sense that movie directors consider each minute detail to beef up their entire film, Pistol Pete takes the same surgical approach on this latest album. The sonics all over this project bleed with pleasurable, clean sounds. He’s got a load of diversity on this project and Pistol Pete clearly pieced up a track for any listener’s mood. With 4 projects under his belt, the latter of which is “Mayday” in 2015, and “The 3 Pete” in 2017- his latest project highlights his growth and commitment to his craft. So much flavor packed into one project should be illegal, but like a seasoned chef Pistol Pete crafted up the perfect recipe with this drop.
Right from the get-go, his intro “The Sweep” gives you the city, gritty feeling with a blue-collar employee simply doing his job, sweeping up the city streets. This skit truly puts you in a place of humility. He then transitions that intro into “Idk”, where he gets a 90s radio introduction which feels like a throwback to the video game “Def Jam: Fight For NY”, then Pistol Pete unleashes the arsenal. He’s collecting bodies on this record, and the production meshes exceptionally well with his aggressive style. As if immediately to tell that some listeners might not appreciate the harder rap style, he showcases true versatility on the next record.
On “Hard Times Kansas City”, featuring Mackenzie Umscheid, you will immediately get chills. The record is so soft in its progression and delivers you serenity with not a care in the world, except that the content matter is serious. It’s a true, and amazing switch up from the previous record. To tell the truth, Mackenzie really makes this record with her sweet-sounding, comforting vocals on the chorus. In our opinion, this is one of the strongest records on the “The Sweep”.
He then switches up genre’s again on “Away”, and showcases a flow that dances all over the production. Pete breaks out the deluxe package of intricacies and snaps into a zone of pitty-pat crispy flows. As if just to showcase his ability, he drops a Nagasaki bomb of a 16 and then leaves gracefully. There are not many artists that can channel the signature style that makes Pistol Pete so enjoyable to listen to. The fact that it’s so simple for him to tap into not one, but many unique patterns is what sets him & “The Sweep” apart.
Having been in the game for 8 years now, he’s definitely entered the conversation as an artist to keep on your radar. We asked Pistol Pete what inspired this impressive catalog, and how the rapper achieved his moniker. He told Rap Fiesta,
The Sweep is an ongoing narrative of my discography. This is my 4th full length record & I’m implying I’ve gone 4-0. This also is a big learning lesson from my past work of any short comings. This go around I did all the small details I felt lacked in past… Pistol initially came from playing basketball in high school. Once I started taking rapping serious half my friends called me Pistol Pete so it just stuck. It also reflects my raps style that’s quick like a Pistol. – Pistol Pete
With strong lead records on this album and Pistol Pete guiding the path to success with a crafty approach to album creation, he’s not an artist you’ll want to take likely. He’s adept in many areas, and “Miss You” is another testament to that fact. He takes a backseat in crazy flows and enters in with a more introspective record of his past, this one in particular channels us back to Mac Miller’s “R.O.S”. All in all, it’s time you check out this project & bump it front to back, he’s got a ton of substance within it. His skits are great, records powerful, and his approach intentional.
As you can tell by listening to the album, the man has a wild work ethic. You don’t make a project of this caliber without that. That being said, you can expect visuals coming soon to accompany “The Sweep”. He told Rap Fiesta, the visuals for “Miss You” have just been completed, and he’s already working on giving us more. He also just dropped his website to give people access to his music, and beautiful merchandise to purchase- you can find that website here. We know you all want more from Pistol Pete, but until then- you’ll have to stream “The Sweep” on your favorite DSP and follow him on Instagram to get the latest from the KC artist.
