St. Louis native Jamine Shakur proves he is a force to be reckoned with in the music industry with the wavy track “Keep Yo Soul.” The music video has already amassed an impressive 7,000+ views on Youtube, proving just how catchy the track is. We had a chance to catch up with Jamine Shakur to ask him what inspired his creativity and soulful lyrics.
“[I wanted] to make something real yet family-oriented.” – Jamine Shakur
Jamine Shakur has been in the music game for about eight years, but he refuses to fall into temporary industry trends. Instead, he would rather stay in his own lane, which is something he expresses in “Keep Yo Soul.” Throughout “Keep Yo Soul,” he describes the numerous lessons he’s learned and words of advice his family has given him about staying true to yourself. The emerging artist raps over a chill, R&B-inspired beat that is sure to captivate any listener, and especially those who need a little inspiration to stay true to themselves despite the world’s drama.
Although the track dropped seven months ago, there’s no doubt it deserves even more attention than it’s already received. Jamine Shakur’s voice shares a noticeable similarity to Grammy-winning artist Lil Wayne’s unique voice. Simultaneously, the consistency of truthful bars supported by a smooth flow is comparable to the Atlanta-bred rapper 6lack.
“I can spot the foolery, fidgety type of energy. See the way you’re using me. Imma start using you. Catch me in the booth, yeah I’m dropping bars, but I’m spilling truth.”
Right from the beginning of the track, Jamine Shakur and featured artist Chris Duncanson hook the listener in with a catchy chorus. Through the remainder of the song, Jamine Shakur raps in several different flows, which has you questioning just how many artists are involved in the track. Jamine Shakur draws attention to everything from his hometown to his appreciation for his parents while effortlessly switching from rapping to singing. It’s inevitable that you will quickly sink into the relaxing yet inspiring tone of the four-minute song.
The multi-dimensional artist’s rap name is just as unique as his flow throughout the song. Jamine was drawn from his birth given middle name. On the other hand, he drew inspiration for Shakur from the well-known social activist in the 1970s, Assata Shakur. In Arabic, Shakur means “the thankful one.” It’s evident that Jamine Shakur draws inspiration from the meaning behind his rap name, as he expresses how thankful he is for everything in his life that developed him on the track “Keep Yo Soul.”
