Gr1m | “Sloth”, An Uplifting, Beautiful Darkness
Gr1m brings something pleasantly unexpected to Rap Fiesta’s platform with his latest single, “Sloth.” The Arkansas-based musician delivers insanely powerful vocals over a heavy-metal beat. On top of all that, Gr1m embodies certain human emotions that are often challenging to put into words.
Gr1m has been whipping up one-of-a-kind music for about six years. And throughout his time, he has continually developed his sound and overall vibe as a musician. Part of what makes the musician’s sound so influential is his ability to pull inspiration from real-life emotions and experiences.
That said, while he was creating “Sloth,” Gr1m drew inspiration from a couple of sources. First off, the song “Save Me” by Jelly Roll played a big part. In “Save Me,” Jelly Roll depicts what it feels like to be lost in a depression accompanied by drugs and alcohol. Needless to say, it’s an extremely emotional song. So it’s no surprise an artist with as much depth as Gr1m was able to take that same message and deliver it differently.
Gr1m aims to portray how a deep depression can feel like your entire world is crashing down around you. To achieve this, the artist teamed up with producer Nathan Cloos. Together, the two generated a beat with an innate ability to bring all your melancholy up to the surface.
‘Sloth’ has more of a “deep dark depression and mental health destroys your world” type vibe – Gr1m.
The beat featured in “Sloth” starts out slow and steady. A gradual and lowkey guitar strums simple yet influential notes. To accompany, a moving orchestra makes its way into the track. Trust us, the partnership of the slow-moving violins and uncomplicated guitar melody is enough to sink you into the feels.
To match this energy, Gr1m delivers his vocals softly, emphasizing the emotions tied to the lyrics. Gr1m doesn’t shy away from addressing his genuine feelings, making “Sloth” much more impactful than most songs.
But something snaps midway through the song. Around the two-minute mark, the beat steadily shifts into a heavy metal-type vibe. Bursts of energy from the electric guitar and drum scream through the speakers. Although the tempo, volume, and style change, the darker beat stills embodies the sinister feel the song’s beginning carried.
Most of my music had a very sad and “I don’t want to be here” undertone to it. The 1 is a nod to my nerd side. As I grew into the name and my voice, it just stuck,” Gr1m, on the origin of his stage name.
Also, we can’t go without mentioning how immediate Gr1m switches up his style to match the rock rhythm. Despite your perception, Gr1m adds even more passion to his vocals, causing your skin to get covered in goosebumps. The versatility the artist is capable of is amazing and could very well leave you speechless after listening to “Sloth.”
From start to finish, “Sloth” is an emotional track that brings up feelings most of us would rather leave alone. But Gr1m isn’t hesitant when it comes to his music. That said, the artist pours everything in his heart into “Sloth,” and it’s well worth the listen. Just make sure you listen to the song as loud as possible to fully embrace all the emotion it carries.
Gr1m has so much in the works as we speak. Although he’s keeping most of his plans secret, we know he will shoot a bunch of music videos shortly. So make sure you follow Gr1m on Instagram to be the first to know when the musician drops something new!
