CapriceGully | Triumph 2 [ALBUM REVIEW]
Have you been waiting for that great new hip-hop album you just can’t hit pause on? Look no further. Rapper and recording artist CapriceGully is providing the hits with his most recent album, Triumph 2. Residing in Augusta, Georgia, CapriceGully (referred to as CG throughout the rest of the article) is kickin’ ass and taking names with this well-rounded, high-energy, and feel-good compilation of songs. This can’t miss 8 track album is filled with star-studded vocal performances and speaker-knocking instrumentals that are completely with the pulse of modern day hip-hop and trap. CG showcases his lyrical acumen along with stylistic versatility all throughout this 21-minute sonic joyride.
The album begins with a bang off rip, as “Street Ambrosia” is a fitting introduction for what’s to come throughout the rest of the album. Reminiscent of a mix between the energy of Xavier Wulf’s iconic and legendary track, “Psycho Pass,” and the persona of early days Gucci Mane, CG absolutely snaps all over this beat. CG effectively blends bars filled with substance, knowledge, and motivation into a marketable, tasteful, easily-digestible modern day hip-hop record that can be enjoyed by all rap lovers.
Every track seemed to bring about another highlight throughout the entirety of this record. With each passing song, CG showcased a variety of flows over a plethora of both hard-hitting trap-styled bangers as well as more sentimental and reflective traditional hip-hop production. Tracks like “G Talk” made me wanna jump off the roof into a mosh pit, slam a 40 oz., hit repeat, and do it all over again. Between the absolutely murderous 808 will surely blow your speak out, and in our opinion was one of our favorite records on the entire project. “Loyalty and Royalty” uses production elements similar to the late XXXTentacion’s “Moonlight,” but is much more substance-driven within the lyrics. We heard similarities in CG’s vocal cadences akin to the likes of mid 2000s Juicy J in this record, and we loved what we heard. At the end of the album, it’s clear that “Reclamation” was the perfect outro to make this project come full circle. Seemingly spilling his heart out onto pen and paper, and then into the microphone, this is where we truly fell in love with CG’s storytelling. These bars exhibited some of CG’s struggle and hardship, while ending with the overall positive and motivational mindset that CG would grind and make it out on top.
Not often do we see hip-hop records with the fluidity and gravitas as CG’s “Triumph 2” displays. After we gave the record a bunch of listens top to bottom, Rap Fiesta had the chance to talk with CG about his background, motivation, and goals for the future. We weren’t surprised to hear that CG has been rapping and making music for almost 20 years (19 to be exact), as it was clear that he’s comfortable within his own artistic-skin and his sound is well-refined. When asked about the origin of his rap name, CapriceGully went on to remark:
“…My stage name is a representation of the south where I was raised & the north where I was born. See in the south when I was growing up all the big time somebody’s in the hood had the big old school cars. Mainly the Caprice Classic, so like that I feel I’m a classic, one of a kind they don’t make people like me in the streets anymore. The up north side reps Gully another slang for hood, street, rugged & raw. So I put both together and came up with CapriceGully a one of a kind hood Soldier…”
It’s always interesting to hear the backstory around the origin of how an artist comes up with their stage name. Sometimes it means nothing at all, and other times it’s a product of many experiences that culminate into a defining alias. It’s evident that with CG he is the latter, and Rap Fiesta is all for it. CG is clearly not a flash in the pan kind of guy, and his attitude towards life and music must certainly be paying dividends.
“…My next moves are dropping some visuals for my new project Triumph 2 & going on a promotional run to build a super strong fan base…”
We love it whenever we come across a guy as real as CG, and we support him even more so after getting to know the man behind the music. All of us at Rap Fiesta can’t wait to catch those visuals when they drop, and we’re gonna keep a close watch on CG as he moves forward with his future plans. We are fans for sure!
