Dee Roc Obama & Thisizjay Are Rap Fiesta Radio’s Week 5 Co-MVPS
Sharing the Rap Fiesta Radio Week 6 crown is “Callin’” by Dee Roc Obama and Thisizjay. This single debuted in 2019, which is fitting because the song transports the listener to a time in the past, that for some reason just feels like a better, simpler time. The soothing, tropical melody brings me back to Jamaica to a time when life was just riding jet skis with beautiful women during the day, and drinking pina coladas in hammocks at night. Oh, and I’ve never done any of that.
The vibe is decidedly upbeat and summer sunset-y, but the song also presents an interesting dichotomy. In the first verse, Dee Roc Obama takes on a melancholy tone, scarred and hesitant, unwilling to let himself fall for a girl he knows is just using him. He lets the phone ring; unanswered. In the second verse, Thisizjay shows none of Dee Roc’s timidity, his tone hopeful and full of youthful exuberance. Enthralled, he picks up the phone.
The chorus is flawlessly executed; an Andre Iguodala to the Golden State Warriors. Full of emotion and with just the right amount of autotune, the chorus ties together perfectly the two rock solid verses, both lyrically and vocally. An exceptionally smooth mix is the cherry on top, and Callin’ lands firm as a song professionally executed by two extremely promising artists. This duo only started releasing music in 2018, making a song this polished both surprising and impressive. The chemistry is real, and I’m fully expecting this to be one of many bangers for Dee Roc and Jay.
Lean back, close your eyes, press play, and let Callin’ carry you away; soft sand, calming waves, and endless sangria.
