Devin | “One Day It’ll Make Cents”, Emotionally Fueled Project
Devin Denzel Davidson, better known as Devin, recently dropped his debut project, “One Day It’ll Make Cents”, and boy is it powerful. The Maryland native is the son of a go-go band pioneer & drummer of Rare Essence & founder Quentin “Footz” Davidson. With this type of legendary musical genetics running through his veins, we knew this project was worth listening to. On “One Day It’ll Make Cents”, Devin didn’t hold back, and packed a plethora of emotion & trauma in 7-tracks of pure heat-seeking rap records. With a very clever title name in “One Day It’ll Make Cents”, the project title is a metaphor for indicating that one day the grind will pay off even though it might not be profitable right now. In Devin’s case, he’s taking the long route & empowering himself by sticking to his grind. With a very real & raw subject matter, he’s created a project to propel him into listeners playlists globally.
On the very first record, he wastes no time setting the scene. Devin jumped right into the painful loss of his father in 1994, and the loss of his brother in 1998- only 4 years apart and both victims of homicide. For him to open up the album with raw vulnerability, only shows you the type of artist he is. Unafraid, willing & dedicated to deal with his struggles, & turn them into a positive. You’ll undoubtedly feel his pain & motivation after listening. The B. EaZYbeats produced record garnishes soulfully placed trumpet progressions & synths that resonate deeply as well.
On the very next record, “Hustle Szn”, he ties it all together. With every struggle that ensues, Devin answers with motivation. This is the response to past pain, and Devin illustrates with clever wordplay that you must grind harder. A huge motivator for anyone who ever felt down, “Hustle Szn” captures the swagger you need to bounce back. He consistently demonstrates versatility on the project with each sequential record differing from the previous. On “10 Toes Down”, he utilizes a somber beat with more directly aimed bars. Addressing doubters & firing up his self-belief with raw tonalities that remind us of Nipsey Hussle.
“One Day It’ll Make Cents” consistently portrays the theme of introspection & mountainous pressure of achieving greatness. With records like “Paranoid”, and “Stamp”, Devin is perceived as an artist with great spirituality. Consistently seeking God for answers, while contrasting in ways of trying to take matters into his own hands & set his own path. His lyrical content is conscious and is highly relatable.
Having only 2 years in the rap game, Devin is keen on making noise & his lead single, “Call on Me”, is doing just that. He’s a very raw & talented artist, and from listening you can tell his songs are real-life situations. He even goes by his own name to indicate that his tracks are memoirs of his life. We wanted to know what motivated Devin to be so real with this project, especially on the intro, and Rap Fiesta was lucky enough to gain comment from Devin where he elaborated,
On my debut album I opened up with the self-titled ‘[Intro]’ produced by my guy B. EaZYbeats. I wanted to paint a vivid picture of the trials and traumatic experiences I had to go through in life. I lost my father in 1994 and my brother, not long after, in 1998 – both victims of homicide. My father’s case remains unsolved. I address how I feel about all of that in the song and despite all the loses I’m determined to make it. I had nobody to guide me. Nobody to show me the way or how to come into my own as a man. I had to figure it out on my own. Even though life has it’s struggles and this is the hand I was dealt, I know that one day it will all pay off. One Day It’ll Make Cents. – Devin
