Dilly Bat | ‘The Virus’, A Sobering Banger
Romanian born, but Canada grown artist DillyBat (love that name by the way- super catchy) is fresh on the terrain with a new single ‘The Virus‘ which is about, you guessed it- the infectious bug sweeping the nation. Except, DillyBat wasn’t aiming to hit a home run with trending topics or to get people talking about the coronavirus, he had a story to tell. He started the music video with a powerful clip that really hit home, and which highlights a struggle that many people around the world are going through. He showed a clip of him putting his hands up against the window pane to represent how some people cannot see their loved ones in their time of need. The world simply is not the same, and DillyBat’s new song is awakening.
Thought this was gonna be my year but I don’t see no change
Fresh and above all relatable, “The Virus” is a sobering commentary on the time we live in. To the backdrop of a very well made video, DillyBat’s emotional, yet crisp delivery strikes straight to the heart of the listener going through the same thing he is. With a dope beat and visuals to set the ambience, DillyBat captures something through music that is difficult for most people to put into words; the reality of living in a pandemic. Specifically, his emphasis on family stands out and connects with the listener. The relevance, raw emotion, and overall consciousness of the song sets up the track as a true stand out in the landscape of today’s underground hip-hop.
Depending on the Government, I’m feeling afraid.
DillyBat succeeded in creating a relatable track that will resonate with a diverse audience. Besides the meaningful, almost poetic lyrics and delivery, the sound itself is mellow, yet engaging, slow but catchy. The beat, produced by Daku Beats, was mixed and mastered by DillyBat himself, who despite his focus as an artist also runs Dillybatproductions, his own self made production company.
The simple fact that this dude is out here creating music videos, rapping, and almost most importantly-mixing and mastering his own tracks straight off his muscle, tells you about the type of worker he is. I mean you don’t see rappers directing and editing their own music videos these days, and the fact is it was absolutely aesthetically pleasing. From sharp cuts to perfectly placed pans, he even had an old wild west vibe to it with the sepia coloring and dusty fields marinating in the sunset. Watching the video in and of itself was a vivid experience, even outside the music.
Inspired by the boredom and constraining nature of the 2020 quarantine, DillyBat truly created a song that can be enjoyed worldwide. Overall, the video, beat, lyrics, and general aura come together to form a striking work of art that captures the feelings, frustrations, and emotions experienced by many today. A song that manages to combine a good sound with meaningful lyrics is unique and important to have in contemporary hip hop. For these reasons, “The Virus” is memorable and speaks on DillyBat’s creativity and vision. Hailing from Saskatoon, DillyBat is an artist and music engineer who has been making music for over 10 years and shows no signs of slowing down. With multiple new music videos in the works, and a new album dropping next summer, Rap Fiesta is excited to see what’s next in store for DillyBat.
