Don Don | ‘Car Tunes II’, Slaps From Front To Back
Don Don out of Detroit is blazing the Hip-Hop scenes with his brand new album ‘Car Tunes II’. The album was released on July 17th, 2020 & is 10 smooth tracks of records to blast in the whip. Hence the clever title of the album, ‘Car Tunes II’ can be symbolically understood as literal tunes to play in your car. We at Rap Fiesta were also delighted to see that there is another perception lying within the title name. We see this album as Cartoons. Based off of Don’s use of colorful imagery & vivid lyrics painting motion pictures within our psyche. There is a lot to love with this latest drop.
The diversity of track selection within this project is pleasurable. One moment you have songs like ‘I Cant Haddat’ rip apart the beat structure with sharp bars, and then immediately a song like ‘How U Gon’ graces your ears with higher melodies & female vocals scat singing in conjunction. This record specifically has to be one of the most versatile on the album. Each segment slips into another realm of moods with seamless transitions.
On tracks like ‘At 7’ Don weaves into a more modern style of Trap Rap & keeps verses in a higher octave. The lyrical content within this track dives into the relations between Don Don & his female counterpart. It’s a highly relatable song for when you’re feeling yourself & oozes a swagger that will make you respect his pen game. There are tons of hidden gems & value to take from the project, but all in all, should be absolutely played to keep you company for every drive. Rap Fiesta had the chance to ask Don Don where the inspiration for the album came & he told us,
The album is a deep cut fasho. My goal was to make songs with a lot of replay value. There were parts of the tape charged by the relationship between black men and opposing forces such as police brutality and systematic racism. And then there are the parts that just make you want to fuck something. The album was exclusively recorded and mastered at SNDWV studios in Highland Park. The production was amazing, it came from collaborating with other creatives from the city like Cam Spacely, D. Revival and my longtime producer MylesAway. – Don Don
With influences like Big Sean, and Ye leading the charge for G.O.O.D music- it’s done well for Don Don in rounding out his all-around style. He doesn’t commit to one style of rapping & that’s why he’ll be successful. He has the ability to adapt & adapt well. A trait that every great must have to stay relevant. He even adapted his artist name to “Don Don” when a girl in high school thought he was cute & gave him the moniker as a nickname, personifying himself with the music & the ladies.
With Car Tunes II leading a strong charge for Don Don’s career, his trajectory is exciting. Overall, Car Tunes II is a superbly smooth album that should be played at high volume on every morning commute, and any other setting where there’s a speaker. With more visuals, merch, and content on the way- his consistency will surely set him apart from his peers. As the CEO for the ForWhatever Ent. label, the moves he’s making will be mountainous.
