DYP | ‘Xtra’, Atmospherically Ear Catching
Philadelphia, PA is home to a lot of special talent when it comes to the rap world. Recording artist DYP is definitely adding to his city’s credibility with songs like his latest release, “Xtra.” The feel-good single, released on June 3rd of this year, showcases DYP’s vernacular acumen and stylistic versatility as he weaves through each line. This record might want to make you get up and dance. It might make you want to spark up a jay. It very well could make you want to do both!
The record, produced by Friday, begins with a slow fade-in over atmospheric piano chords and a simple yet ear-catching vocal chop. After this quick four-bar intro, the production drops with well executed pitched hi-hat lines accompanied by sonically pleasing percussion and kicks. At the same time, DYP comes in hot with his memorable and pseudo-melodic hook that gets stuck in your head as soon as you hit play. Thereafter, DYP shows off his versatility by spitting verses that mix clever wordplay with impressive flows that have an off-the-cuff and improvisational feel. Everything you’d want hear out of a great rap song with a light-hearted and enjoyable vibe can be found pretty quickly within this jawn.
After playing this record about a dozen times, we had to get to know a little more about the artist. Rap Fiesta reached out to DYP to get a little more insight into some of his inspiration, backstory, and goals. When asked about how this song came about, he remarked the following:
“… I was actually at a get together for a celebration of my engineer’s new studio, many artists that were around were eager to hop on a song together… I gave money to @fridayy for the beat while we all was vibing. Suddenly, the other artists lost interest and I told my engineer “Marco” @mpsoundstudio “I’ll just rip this jawn by myself…”
Oftentimes, some of the best records with the most replay value in any genre come together spontaneously without much planning or consideration. We feel fortunate that DYP took the time out to create this tune and that this particular record went in the direction that it did. It’s clear that DYP has been at this for a while, but we at Rap Fiesta wanted to ask him a little more about his backstory. We weren’t surprised to hear that he’s been “writing since [he] was 11-years-old, and professionally recording since 14.” The years of working on his craft and chipping away at his sound have definitely culminated into a compelling and gravitating skill-set. As for his next moves, DYP is making sure to keep himself busy:
“…After this pandemic is fully over I plan on releasing visuals, as well as two projects I’m working on…”
We’re applauding DYP for his hustle, and can’t wait to see what the coming months and years have in store for him. Until then, we got his catalog spinning on repeat, and so should you.
