Ill Snek | ‘Sneakers’, Encapsulates A Desolating Rage
Tapping into raw anger, Ill Snek’s latest single, ‘Sneakers,’ hits some of the deepest parts of your soul as it bumps through the speakers. The Stanhope, New Jersey native recorded ‘Sneakers’ to take a break from his more common emotionally charged music to tap into feelings of rage.
Not only does Ill Snek perfectly encapsulate these emotions, but the emerging artist also transfers his own sentiments to his listeners with ‘Sneakers.’
The ‘Sneakers’ rhymer has spent his entire life surrounded by music. From playing saxophone and being in metal bands throughout grade and middle school, Ill Snek has exposed himself to an array of sounds.
Regarding his interest in hip-hop, Ill Snek credits underground rap and trap in grabbing his interest. At the young age of 16, Ill Snek began independently releasing music after spending a significant amount of time writing lyrics and crafting his own beats.
Unlike the overall tone of ‘Sneakers,’ Ill Snek’s stage name has a much lighter origin story. The New Jersey rapper drew inspiration from the popular ‘I’m A Snake’ video, which rose to fame in 2010. With a bit of help from his manager, his stage name formed into what it is today, Ill Snek.
I was writing a lot of really emotional songs with an almost journal entry style of writing, and for this track, I wanted to take a break from that a bit – Ill Snek.
‘Sneakers,’ produced by Ill Snek’s friend Dakun, highlights a beat with a The Kid LAROI feel to it. Trap influences like a jumpy series of hi-hats and a bopping bass pattern give ‘Sneakers’ a steady pace. Matching Ill Snek’s tone, an almost daunting guitar melody provides the rhythm with that sense of melancholy ‘Sneakers’ embodies.
As Ill Snek’s vocals ring through the speakers, you can’t help but hear similarities to the late Juice WRLD, both in sound and lyrical content. After letting solemn guitar chords play at the song’s beginning, a hallowing vocal run instantly sets the tone. After the first bass drops, Ill Snek comes in hard with an aggressive attitude that wakes you up whether you’re ready or not.
From start to finish, Ill Snek’s bars pop with a level of force you’ll just have to listen to. Ill Snek emphasizes each lyric and cuts off every bar with an intriguing force, drawing attention to the beat and his fury. In fact, Ill Snek’s flow is so intoxicating it distracts you from the general stirring nature of the lyrics.
There’s no denying Ill Snek is a rapper with an incredible amount of talent that just effortlessly oozes out into his music. In every bar, you’re able to clearly absorb everything Ill Snek is experiencing. ‘Sneakers’ has an emo-rap feel to it, and I’ll Snek’s capability to connect with such raw emotion is captivating.
Perky gave me a fever, my legs getting weaker. But baby, I’m eager. And I got a Xanny stuffed into my sneaker. My momma, I love her; she knows I’m a tweaker. My daddy, he hates me because I’m a schemer – Ill Snek.
Fortunately, you don’t have to wait too much longer for more music from Ill Snek. The Jersey rapper’s 5-track EP, entitled ‘Fear & Loathing,’ is set to drop soon. If ‘Sneakers’ indicates the elite level his upcoming EP is at, Ill Snek won’t have to wait long until he blows up.
