JayyR x Rap Fiesta Interview
RF: It’s dope to be linking up with you fam. Why don’t you let everyone in on where you’re from?
JayyR: “The Sioux” as we call South Sioux City, Nebraska / Sioux City, Iowa where I was born. I then jumped off the porch And moved to Los Angeles in 2018.
RF: Awesome, not a lot of rap artists that we know from the Midwest. What inspired “Trappopish”?
JayyR: This song really got me back to my roots as an artist since moving to Hollywood. I wanted to Describe what TRAP POP is, and remind people of my sound which is a mixture of trap lyrics with pop melodies and electronic beats. This is definitely a song I would recommend to someone that is a new listener solely because this showcases the person I am, especially with [the] music video we just dropped for it. I went back home during this COVID period and shot it at my friends production studio by David of Kreative Media and edited by director Omontoyar who has done mostly all my videos.
RF: The visual was definitely vivid & vibrant, and had some awesome editing to it too. The beat was just as captivating to us. Who produced it?
JayyR: My boy from Omaha, Nebraska producer/artist, Bucky P. It was one of the songs I made from beats I selected for our recent collaborative project, “almost aamous”, but he came together with other fellow musicians Casino Gaines, & Justus to make this one in particular. I recorded at heartbreak studio in LA, My engineer loverboy brought that sound to what you hear. I knew when I heard it was a hit no doubt.
RF: That’s awesome. From the visual, to the production, engineering & your performance- it all ties in skillfully together. It must’ve taken you a while to develop that sound. How long have you been making music?
JayyR: I’m 23, I’ve been down since like 12, 6th grade rapping at lunch tables with the homies but kept growing and serious end of high school 17-18. Throughout those periods of time I just studied and worked with other local artists built up a team of close friends naturally and been taking big steps since.
RF: That’s awesome. We love to see it grow organically. What is the meaning behind your stage name?
JayyR: Honestly, it’s like a family thing. Me and my dad got the same first name so everyone in my family would call me JR., but one of my cousins started saying it by “JayyR” and I ran with that. Started putting it in my gamer tag on Xbox, and joined a dance crew where my name started getting around my hometown then started my music career.
RF: That’s very natural, that’s whatsup. With “Trappopish” undoubtedly being an awesome hit to start your career off. What are your next moves & where do we go from here?
JayyR: Keep pushing the culture creating timeless work releasing content building my brand/businesses. I’m in the works of launching a label/agency to help other artists with services and growth. I’m heavily involved with other creatives here in the U.S and other countries. With the relationships I have built, I just want to make great art. It’s all bout being on the next thing or seeing the potential in anyone for me. Putting my people in position and leading by example to grow with each other to be a better human. Bless to the most high as I manifest to my high self.
