Jordan Fletcher | ‘Somewhere Off Alberta’, [ALBUM REVIEW]
Alberta rapper & activist Jordan Fletcher is back making waves on Rap Fiesta with his fire-fueled, gritty & illustrious debut album ‘Somewhere Off Alberta’. Properly titled, as Jordan Fletcher has been out in the streets of Portland fighting for what’s right with today’s tyrannical justice system while bringing awareness & bars to the table. Tailoring these moments in history with grizzly intellect and flows that are sure to shock you, the Norf Side rapper packs heavy punches in each fleeting record. Jordan Fletcher’s approach on ‘Somewhere Off Alberta’ carries weight for much of Black America has experienced. Police brutality, unjust racial systems, and constant violations of rights. These are the issues he tackles so elegantly and head-on, unafraid of whose feelings they hurt. His only goal is to inspire change & produce bangers and ‘Somewhere Off Alberta’ does just that.
The intro to the album kicks into conscientious gear with one minute of bone-chilling experience of the Alberta rapper bringing listeners in on his tumultuous upbringing. He sets the scene perfectly and then dives right into “Today” with ferociousness, rich lyrics & an endless amount of high-energy. The feature he grabs from Donte Thomas compliments the fiery style well.
“Pray to God I don’t get locked today” – Jordan Fletcher
“Paranoid” might be the most relatable record on the project thus far. In most unsafe situations, we’re told to call the police. But from experience, when called upon the situations can turn more deadly than neutral, especially if you’re black. These are the conversations Jordan Fletcher brings to the forefront, his feelings in pure & raw form. Not only does his lyrical content contain paramount topics, his records still slap too. Diving right into “Bullshit” he turns up the heat a few notches. While his cadence is calm and controlled, Jordan Fletcher finds the sweet spots within the record to get you turned up. This is the record that’ll get the whole squad in sync and ready to execute. Pre-game, in the tunnel music. Ready to snap off at any moment music. Pure excitement infiltrates the body of these records and for good reason, Jordan Fletcher is attacking beats with infectious energy.
Undoubtedly, Rap Fiesta’s favorite record of the album is ‘Toxic Masculinity‘, where Jordan dives into his own insecurities and sheds light on his vulnerability as a man, something that is not commonly done in Hip-Hop. Jordan’s mind frame is one of few. It lies within exposing hard truths about the world, about himself, and bringing in awareness to topics that are discussed infrequently. “Somewhere Off Alberta” makes people aware of the facts while dropping in colorful bangers and thought-provoking jams. He lets it all out on this project and brings people into his world. On “Norf, Pt. 1” he scripts what it was like growing up in his world, being poverty-stricken, misunderstood, and what he had to do to come up in this world. Nothing is off-limits with Jordan Fletcher’s album, and on “Somewhere Off Alberta” he pulls back the curtain for the world to see.
With multiple records to enjoy off this project, you’ll surely be enlightened while you’re jamming. An artist of his caliber is important for Hip-Hop to experience as the dude has raw talent, and uses it to shed light and bring awareness. There aren’t many artists doing that on a level where the tracks are heat, sonically pleasing, and educational, but Jordan Fletcher encompasses all avenues on this album. He’s a serious artist to look out for, and the way he approaches the game we can see a cult-like following development for the Oregon artist. He stands for something important, and his music sparks something in you- his future bright, and his bars serious. Protect Jordan Fletcher at all costs, Hip-Hop needs him.
