Karie | “THE KALM” EP Is Making Waves
Karie’s latest project, THE KALM comes as a final warning to those who are quick to act on emotion. Whether its based off of falling into lust or the he say/she say spiel — Karie predicts the outcome. Some would go far as to say he’s like the drizzle before the thunderstorm. However these notions come from a black bubble that he just can’t seem to escape. In Karie’s words, “..it’s a place of isolation that can keep you out of touch with reality and expose you to your monkey mind.” Still, THE KALM is by no means negative. THE KALM serves as a reminder to go on even when it gets tough. “I want the music to help you find your own light. It’ll help you realize when you’re in your own bubble.” Karie says in reference to THE KALM, “Vibe with me and enjoy. I hope my music resonates with you. From me to you here is THE KALM.“
Drifting between Birmingham, UK and Long Island, NY — Karie comes from a miscellaneous atmosphere that fits just right into the sound he goes for. Sure, UK reels out his cool and collected side through his ballad-like vocal play. But when the NY comes out, all his words are cut-throat. Songs like “TIRED” from THE KALM go to prove that theory. Here, Karie tells it like it is. Even though the girl in the scenario falls hard for him, he refuses to believe anything she says. Simply because she’s just lonely and needs some company. Noted, Karie shows an example of his music’s purpose with this line from “TIRED” as well. “You have to sprint like you’ll never get to run again,” is really a positive mantra that uplifts those who feel like throwing in the towel. It says ‘keep going’ so subtly and somehow, we’re encouraged to do so. Besides this “TIRED” uses a beat with an ambient flair. Due to Karie’s signature harmony, the vibes are nothing but coastal. Nonetheless all parts of the song give leeway for THE KALM’s next track, “Yellow Mountains.” to reveal Karie’s other thoughts.
Now “Yellow Mountain” does a 360 on Karie’s cold but honest words. Instead of shunning away a woman’s love, he is more accepting towards falling in love. All he asks for in return is sincerity. Sorta like a ride-or-die who wouldn’t mind smoking a blunt and enjoying all of the beauty that nature has to offer. Likewise, Karie shows his gratitude towards different cultures by adding a warm, pleasant native tongue in the beginning of “Yellow Mountains.” Like “TIRED” it has an ambient soundscape. Furthermore “Yellow Mountains” jabs at the 808’s every now and then.
All Karie wants is no lies. So girl, you better show some emotion.
Last but not least “WhiteShirt Freestyle” brings out the spook in certain individuals who once doubted Karie’s potential. As Karie slips on the long sleeve white tee and goes in, he allows vibrant, dark piano chords and splits of rewinding synthesizers to do the same. In his soft, warm vocality — Karie takes it even further with a bold statement “You know I got this already.” He is frustrated that others are downplaying his self-drive but that won’t stop Karie from proving them wrong. He believes in himself and that’s all that matters.
Overall, THE KALM is meant to be listened during late-night cruises, dark times and moments when ones self-doubtful. It’s the type of album that stays with you for a lifetime. THE KALM just goes to prove that Karie’s artistry is complex. Surely, Karie is creating his own wave in the contemporary R&B scene.
By being bold with his rhyme schemes, delivery and beat choice — THE KALM will garner multiple streams before 2019 comes to an end.
