Kennyjonez | ‘The Come Up’, Refined Pen Game
Rap Fiesta fam, I present to you Joyner Lucas’ long lost brother, Kennyjonez. In a song that literally acts as a metaphor in and of itself, Kennyjonez flexes polished mic skills with a deft touch.
“The Come Up was inspired by my journey in music. It hasn’t been an easy process, but it’s been a fulfilling one. (The Come Up) goes out to anyone grinding and hustling toward their goal and not letting anyone stop them.” – Kennyjonez
“The Come Up” mimics this artistic journey. The beat is steady and consistent throughout the song, and Kennyjonez jumps in and out of flows; plugging away, and making adjustments constantly; buying into the work ethic and trusting the process. Consistency and perseverance; two extremely important attributes in real life, both conspicuously present throughout “The Come Up.” His vocals are edgy but classy, in the way Dwayne Wade dresses, not Russell Westbrook. KJ’s writing and storytelling background is evident, and the pen game is definitely one of Kennyjonez’s strongest selling points.
While it’s clear KJ is comfortable in the Lil Dicky-esque storytelling role, the inflection in his voice and ease in his delivery gets me really excited to see what KJ can do with a more up-tempo, on your feet instrumental. Fast-talk-rap is a you have it or you don’t kind of thing, and Kennyjonez most certainly has it. We shouldn’t have to wait long to see the different iterations of his skill-set, because Kennyjonez has two projects planned before the calendar year ends.
Kennyjonez the artist is limited only by the potential of Kennyjonez the person, and everything we’ve seen so far from this budding musical talent indicates that he has the mental fortitude to make waves in the music industry. He knows what he wants to talk about and he knows how to say it. There are artists that introduce themselves with a bang and are forgotten just as quickly a la Cali Swag District. Then there are artists who are less social media inclined, and with a focus on the musical work product maintaining its place at the forefront, slowly develop an artistic portfolio that demands your respect. Staying power folks, that will be a Kennyjonez hallmark.
What’s so exciting about an artist like Kennyjonez is that he has so much untapped potential. You can teach bars or expand vocabulary, but you can’t teach natural vocal talent like Kennyjonez. In his own words, he’s just going to keep applying pressure, and we all know what happens with enough pressure: diamonds.
