Keyshon Williams | ‘Honestly’, Hard-Nosed Hip-Hop
Rap Fiesta lyricist diehards, this one is for you. The Lincoln, Cali native Keyshon Williams begins the tour of his musical vault with the single “Honestly.” The beat is fresh, featuring a nice interplay between piano keys and variably paced bass. More importantly, it serves as the perfect backdrop for Keyshon to talk his talk and lay out exactly who he is as an artist and what fuels his gas tank.
“Fake love; that ain’t what I’m made of. Bitch we can’t ever wait up, motherfuckers need a payout.”- Keyshon Williams
Keyshon’s interlude tells you exactly what he wanted to convey in the making of ‘Honestly.’ Coming up in the entertainment industry, Keyshon has had a myriad of experiences with people who don’t live up to their self-ascribed level of work product. We asked Keyshon what the song meant to him and he had this to say,
‘Honestly’ was inspired by my feelings of anger and annoyance toward some people I’ve worked with in the entertainment industry. Most people I encounter in the business promise immaculate work with lighting fast turn around times, when in reality most people just demand money up front and then take forever to finish the product. I completely understand that that’s business, you have to watch out for the ill-intentioned. However, in this case I felt like releasing some aggression by way of my art, instead of stewing about it over and over. You live and you learn, I just gotta keep moving carefully from now on.” – Keyshon Williams
In the second part of the interlude, Keyshon’s emotion really shines through. He then launches into a first verse as gritty and hardcore as Pablo EskoBear (look this legend up). Keyshon’s flow is easy and his lyrics are clearly enunciated. With a little more experience in the studio and a slightly more evolved pen game, Keyshon Williams will be a lyrical force in the booth.
We’re going to have to take a paragraph to show some love to the feature on this song because the way ‘B’ and Keyshon’s vocals contrast is one of my favorite parts of the song. Immediately the listener is transitioned from Keyshon’s hard-nosed lyrics to the sweet, delicate voice of ‘B.’ The way she executes the chorus and following verse is just so natural and refreshing, and just when you begin to settle into her vocals, Keyshon is right there to slap you in the face with his.
The Collectivistbeats produced record was clearly made with the proper amount of authenticity. With the chemistry being exquisitely clear, the producer vocalist duo has a history. They collaborated on an entire album together titled ‘Weightless’. This type of working experience creates a magical setting to prosper and its fruition is clear with ‘Honestly’. Having been making music since the age of 15, Keyshon gives us a glimpse into the journey of his artistic career,
It started out with my older brother and I just messing around on GarageBand…We paid the 5.99 it cost to get the app on our phone, and we thought we were f*cking on… Eventually, I made my way through multiple lower-level DAWs until I started using Logic and Fruity Loops. I dropped my first mixtape when I was a senior in high school, titled ‘Childish Adult’. It honestly was not good at all but I’m proud of myself for completing it all by myself and for the personality that shined so brightly on that project.
With determination to be self-sufficient and a will to be great, Keyshon Williams has his sight set on the big picture. He’s dropping a plethora of singles very shortly and is lifting the restrictions he had previously placed on himself. We know, you all want the singles now, but in the mean time ‘Honestly’ will have to hold you down.
