King De$ | ‘Redemption’
King De$ treats each production at hand as his confessional in Redemption.
On the 10-track album, the rapper speaks about betrayal in both romantic and platonic relationships. However, he doesn’t just point the finger at others.
In some moments of Redemption, King De$ also takes accountability for his actions. Like in “All Alone,” he admits to making some not-so-great choices. “My decisions was flawed/I was chasing h*es like they tails was bronze,” he delivers. No matter the obstacle, King De$ will continue “climbing the ladder.” As a reminder, he often reflects on his progression thus far.
“Manic” takes a dive inside King De$’s mind. The dark lullaby-styled beat sees him battling it out with a group of phoneys who only reach out when they need assistance. Elsewhere, he addresses individuals who show remorse or love when it’s only beneficial for them. After all, clout chasing is something dangerous. Yet, despite his trust being broken, King De$ continues putting everything into music.
He spits,
“If I ever end my life negus gon hear this / If I ever spit these bars I feel like Kendrick / Or Hendricks.”
King De$ also raps,
“Never will I let them thoughts flow my mind/It’s manic on the Patek got em going crazy for time/People gon hate you when you alive/Then when you die you’ll be idolized /They bring flowers for you now uh/Just to see the haters take a bow.”
In light of themes surrounding disloyalty, “Sunrise” gives credit to a real one. King De$ takes time to admire a woman whose his “peace when it’s stress on my head.”
From addressing haters to fake friends and lovers, the New Jersey-based musician makes sure his words cut deep. He leaves no room for apologies or second chances and treats the experiences as well-learned lessons. King De$’s scathing bars are met with self-assurance and positive affirmations. His choice of cadence exudes both power and passion.
The extent of his lyrical prowess shines through each record, specifically the clever punchlines. For example, in “Sorry Not Sorry,” he spits, “Wrote my story, I’m the author/No DW, but I spot you Arthur’s.” Other times, the rapper delivers silky melodies that bring out a specific emotion.
Featuring Quhad Lawson and Don Mykel, Redemption is an album that’ll help others who have been blind-sighted by one’s actions. Moreover, they’ll see the bigger picture of what it’s taught them. He adds, “The theme correlates to a phoenix rising from the ashes.”
Natalee Gilbert got a chance to interview King De$ about his artistry and Redemption. Read it below:
How does your new project differ from your previous work?
This project was a very personal one. Before making this album, I was dealing with a lot. My Instagram got hacked, and I was dealing with relationships coming to an end. And my way of dealing with it is how I know best.
Three things you need while in the studio:
Being that I have a home studio, I have everything I need. But if I go to a studio, I’d have my phone, water, and food. That’s all I need
What kind of ‘sound,’ production-wise, did you have in the back of your mind prior to entering the studio?
Well, I usually gravitate to dark, hard-hitting production. Being that I also produce, I also love samples. But for this project, I wanted a beat that spoke to me and brought out my emotions at the time.
Favorite track to record off your new project?
My favorite track to record was “Last Laugh.” I was just in my bag lyrically. But honestly. all the songs on this project are my favorites.
What do you hope people take from it?
I hope that people can relate to it. At least find one song from the project that they can relate to.
What or who inspired the album’s theme?
The inspiration behind this album was based on redemption. Moreso, coming back from something.
Explain your creative process:
It depends on my mood. I already know where the song is going if it’s a beat I made. If it’s a beat that I didn’t make, I’ll associate it with a name of a song I’ve written and the vibe of the song and find how it fits with the beat.
One song that tugged at your heartstrings:
It has to be “Look In My Eyes.” It brought so much passion out of me.
If you had one message to give your fans, what would it be?
Thank you for showing me love and enjoying my music. It means a lot to me. I love you guys.
What other work do you have in store?
I have a single out called “Said So,” and I have an EP coming out this year.
