Kuzzo | “Big Cap”, Trendsetting A New Wave
Born and raised in Charlotte NC, but currently residing in Atlanta, Kuzzo hits the streets with his new single “Big Cap” to bring awareness and disapproval over the absurd amount of “cappin” currently happening on social media. With those unfamiliar, “cappin simply means to fake it or lie about an occurrence, typically regarding one’s own wealth or status. Kuzzo spits bars over the piano-based instrumental about how social media has given platforms to those who would typically never get any type of respect or acknowledgment. Additionally, any type of disrespect around him would be handled near immediately.
“In my hometown of Charlotte, NC, I’m one of many first-generation Americans, born of Nigerian parents. Growing up that’s what we all called each other. It made sense. Seemed fitting.”
“Big Cap” starts out with melodious piano production, while Kuzzo gently gets into the thick of things. Suddenly, Mars98 drops the bass and Kuzzo begins to delve into cappin and that people should be wise to cap around him. Within the first verse, Kuzzo rides the beat flawlessly, encapsulating his goal to start a new sound; similar to trap R&B with a twist. He finds a way to pick the pockets with precision without wasting a single bar or breath. He touches on various topics within the two verses, from women, his focus on success, and his views of social media. The second verse comes directly at the listener stating he has nothing to be afraid of, backed by his promise to get what he deserves.
Kuzzo’s creativity with his wordplay gracefully makes “No Cap” sound rich and vibrant, an issue many musicians struggle with today. One of his best lines shows pity for his enemies, even making a reference to famous European NBA Player Manu Ginóbili, – “Sh*t could go left like Ginóbili, it ain’t his fault he doesn’t know me”. The entirety of “No Cap” is filled with subtle wordplay just like this. In an attempt to pave his own lane, Kuzzo seems to have discovered a sound that with more refinement, can start an entire wave. Even the music video for “Big Cap” shows Kuzzo spitting at the camera while performing unique walks by swinging his arms as the camera pans backward. We had the chance to speak with Kuzzo on what inspired the single, and he told us;
“First and foremost, the times we’re living in. How the era of social media has CAP at an all-time high.
Also, and most importantly, I saw the opportunity to make something completely different and start a brand new wave.“
Even though “Big Cap” just dropped, Kuzzo still remains on his grind, as his next single “Nonstop” is dropping in the first quarter of 2021. Expect to see him at shows in the NC/ATL area and his EP this summer. To keep up, follow Kuzzo on Instagram and be the first to hear “Nonstop” before it begins to make waves.
