NERDOfficial | ‘Let You Go’, Clean-Cut and Catchy
If you take a listen to the catalogue of recording artist NERDOfficial, you can tell he’s no stranger to coming up with catchy and memorable songs. His new single ‘Let You Go ft. BigBreeze’ is no exception. This well-produced track, produced by LTTB and Mantra, is filled with cohesive writing and notable melodies that’ll leave the listener wanting to hit rewind as soon as it ends. The engineering on this record is crystal clear as well, and overall this song makes for an enjoyable listen.
The track begins with a string of various instrumentation lines that really sets the pace for what’s to come throughout the record. The soothing guitar and arpeggiated pluck lines sit nicely over luscious pad chords in the intro and are eventually interspersed throughout other parts of the record. All of the main percussive elements in this song fit nicely together as well, as every sound has intention and sounds expensive. When Nerd comes in with his vocal he doesn’t disappoint. He comes in with various melodic licks throughout the duration of his verses and hook that are dynamic as well as attention-grabbing. After the first hook, rapper BigBreeze then comes in with one of the most fire feature verses I’ve heard in a while. He sifts through flows with precision and articulates his words clearly and with confidence. His performance compliments Nerd’s contributions nicely on this track, and after listening to the song a few times I thought it was a pretty strong effort that was put forward.
After taking a listen to this song, and a bunch of others within the discography of NERDOfficial, Rap Fiesta wanted to get to know a little more about the artist. In our exclusive interview with NERDOfficial, we got to a chance to get personal with the man behind the music. NERDOfficial, born in Georgetown, Guyana, lived in his hometown for 8 years until he to Decatur, Georgia, and has lived there with his family ever since. When asked about what in particular inspired ‘Let You Go’ he remarked:
…’Let You Go’ was inspired by the 2020 yeah. We’ve lost a great deal of amazing people from COVID 19 and police brutality. I was inspired to make a record paying tribute to those who lost their loved ones. I’m also a big fan of science fiction; this hints to the portal in the artwork . I’m not going to give away too much else but this sets up the storyline for my next album. Not only did I want the song to resonate with our current timeline but I also wanted it to push beyond that as well. I always like to go the extra mile creativity.”
I feel a greater appreciation for the music after having the meaning of the song explained from Nerd’s perspective. Something that a lot of great songs have in common is that they do an effective job of making the listener feel a certain way, provoke a certain thought, or evoke a certain emotion that might deviate significantly from the original intention of what the artist had in mind when they wrote it. What I feel ‘Let You Go’ does a great job of is just that: every listener is going to find meaning in this song in their own way, and the fact that Nerd comes at it’s inception from so many angles adds a lot of value for those of us who want to dig a little deeper past the surface. We then got a chance to ask nerd about how he got started making music. He went on to say:
Since I was younger I always wanted to become a professional artist. I just never knew how I could get started until one day (Summer of 2011) I was chilling at my best friend’s house. He and his homies were in a rap group called ‘2sikk.’ I didn’t really know what it was all about but they were working on a track, so I decided to get in on the action and from that point on I officially joined the group. As the first few months went by, I started to see that this could potentially be my big break into getting into music. We had a very diverse group; everyone’s styles were a bit different so when we came together it made so much sense. In 2015, I graduated from SAE Atlanta, an audio engineering school. I learned how to record, mix, and produce. That became a big help in our production efforts. Our main group members were ‘DK, The Most Dedicated,’ ‘Mysterio Acapello,’ and then me, ‘NERD.’ We actually dropped a few mixtapes and recorded our first studio album ‘Planet Amalga 2’ in 2017. We had great momentum going after that, however we all gradually felt disconnected from each other. Everyone started having different mindsets and approaches to things and it just got really confusing and frustrating. From that point, Dk decided to leave the group leaving me and Mysterio. We didn’t really know where to go from there so we decided it was best to throw in the towel as 2Sikk and focus on our solo careers. In 2017, I began my solo career as ‘NERDOfficial’ and within that same year I met my other best friend/business partner ‘Kid Mar$$.’ Long story short, he broke my mic stand and we ending up taking a trip to guitar center to get a new one. We started having a conversation from about our music direction and he pitched the idea to me of becoming another rap group. I decided to go even bigger than that: I said ‘Let’s start a record label and change the music game.’ We started ‘OFC CAMP’ formally known as ‘Out Of Class Records’ and the rest was history. I’m so proud of everything that I’ve accomplished over the last decade. The 2sikk days were a big part of my development as an artist. OFC Camp just took things to the next level with me. I fell in love with helping other artists level up their sound and push their creative boundaries. You create your own destiny with our label, anything is possible with the right mindset and team. We treat our artists like family, that’s the ‘OFC OUT OF CLASS’ mentality.”
Rap Fiesta loved having the chance to experience Nerd’s music and get to know him a little more personally as well. There’s no doubt ‘Let You Go’ will be in the rotation of my personal playlist, and are happy to be able to show our support. We are definitely rooting for him in the future and are sure the best has yet to come for this blossoming young talent.
