PaulyTrilla | “The Drug Tape 2”, 8-Tracks of Delight
PaulyTrilla is back on Rap Fiesta’s radar with the release of his 6th studio album, “The Drug Tape 2“. The Illinois rapper was last seen on Rap Fiesta last June, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic where he cleverly dropped his previous album, “Art of Quarantine”. With freshly crafted verses surrounding the aura of kind-heartedness, and a peculiarly enticing 8 track album – he presents his greatest project thus far, “The Drug Tape 2”.
PaulyTrilla has never been one to shy away from controversial topics, and the title of his album, “The Drug Tape 2”, suggests that emphatically. His sound is cultivated around the unorthodox, and heightened by the symphonies he lets fly. The 7th song “Ladadadaaadaaaaadaaaaaaa” suggests just that, and yes-that’s the actual name of the song. It’s not common you see a song titled with 18 a’s in it’s title, but then again PaulyTrilla is uncommon. The record embodies a playful flow, with a mellow Pauly setting the scene with a melodious hook only to enrapture you with a clean, swift 16.
Arguably one of our favorite records on the project is Pauly’s “In My Ride“. It’s one of the records that set the album apart. “In My Ride” is fun, smooth-energy and an overall bop. The hook on this is simply phenomenal- with Pauly introspectively analyzing his life while stiff-arming his problems out of reality. It’s a place we’ve all been, and one that PaulyTrilla makes us feel with elegance.
We asked Pauly what sparked the inspiration for this project, and to our delight he responded,
I started writing this immediately after Art of Quarantine. I was so fed up with the virus and politics and all the violence around us so that album was really a vent for all that frustration. This album is the exact opposite. The Drug Tape 2 is much more upbeat and vibey, just something to make myself and people feel better (or hopefully forget) about everything that’s happened. It is a continuation of my Drug Tape series that I typically drop every 1-2 years. I look at this album as a return to normal, the focus is on the music and not the chaos we got shoveled last year. – PaulyTrilla
That anger built up from the coronavirus pandemic indirectly influenced “The Drug Tape 2”. From it’s depression, Pauly fostered the bad times and used them to his advantage to instill hope for what’s to come post-pandemic. He delivered a cohesively-pieced project, and it’s buoyant energy is uplifting and will surely find it’s way into your hearts, and playlists.
