Seth Duvon | ‘Quarantine 09’, Redefining Hip-Hop’s Barriers
Seth Duvon out of Brampton, Ontario is breaking the mold & redefining the definition of Hip-Hop. His latest project “Quarantine 09”, is 9 tracks of pure serene sounds, meshed with throwback feels & groovy verses. “Quarantine 09” was released on September 19th, and couldn’t have been released at a more opportune time. With summer on its last leg, and the world recovering from the biggest pandemic in over 100 years- Seth Duvon drops off a project that can restore faith in humanity.
On “These True Feelings”, the production feels video game-like, almost as if you’re racing through one of those crazy maps on Mario Kart trying to find your purpose. Luckily for you, Seth Duvon’s vocals will lead you to the promised land with uber confidence, and a bonafide verse. His flow is classy, and that’s an adjective you don’t hear often in Hip-Hop. You might as well dress his lyrics up in a tux and call the man doctor because his bars have a Ph.D. It’s hard to believe that Seth Duvon is of this generation after hearing this intro record. He rattles off sonic production that teleports you into the 70s, while touting a flow similar to Rob Base of the 80s, and then warps it together with a female chorus that snaps you back into the 2000’s.
On “Meh”, which is how most of 2020 has been feeling, he touches on the reality that we are now living in. Displaying lyrical content focused on past struggles, but guiding us towards self-improvement. It’s this type of contrast that Seth Duvon is so comfortable in, showcasing records that aren’t commonly found amongst rap millennials- and distorting them into Hip-Hop bangers. “Oh, My Head Is Clear” literally sounds like it was made in Outerspace on an Alien aircraft, this is what level Seth Duvon is on. Oh, and by the way- every single hook slaps hard. The best part about the choruses on this project is that you will absolutely not be able to anticipate them. He’s very comfortable contrasting them to his vocal & they mesh wonderfully.
It’s worth mentioning that the sounds are otherworldy on this album, and at times makes you wonder if you’re in the midst of an Avatar film. On “Emotions”, you can appreciate Seth Duvon’s illustrious vocal glazing the airy production & delivering a feeling of serenity. Don’t get too comfortable though, as soon as “You’re Such A Copycat” comes on, you’ll be fully awake & bopping. His genre is so full of elements from subsets of music, that it’s actually hard to pin-point this to just Hip-Hop.
With uncovering too much, we’ll comment last on his outro “Quarantine ’09”. It’s a very fitting outro, and title for his album as this last composition sums up farewell feelings. If you close your eyes you can picture ending movie credits, and rightfully so as that album truly felt like a wonderful film. If you’ve made it this far, it’s time to do yourself the favor and go listen to Seth Duvon’s album “Quarantine ’09” on all streaming platforms, and follow the man himself on Instagram to stay in the loop with any new drops.
