In essence, “By Your Side” assures a lover that they won’t get hurt again.
Through thick and thin, the Princeton, New Jersey native, Shawn Red vows to never leave their side. But past situations, keep his lover on the fence.
Granted that, the lover also “has to go to make it on their own,” Red accepts what he cannot change.
Rather than steering clear, Red shows in his hazy, symphonic note range that he’s down for the ride. Singing with fiery passion for his flame, Red also makes sure to create a harmonic chorus that’s infectious by default. Within the soundscape of “By Your Side,” one can faintly hear the very beginning of Drake’s production in “Hotline Bling.” Coupled well with flute progressions is a saxophone and subtle drum that cries “I’ll never leave your side.”
For the most part, this bittersweet track resembles an alternative R&B ballad. In hindsight, Red knows that even if he were to let go, his love would remain. So, Red puts his pride aside to give his ex-lover some TLC all-year round.
“I just want to make music that makes me feel free without limiting anything about myself.”
