Stiggz | ‘Guinness’, Past Trauma With Transparency
London-based rapper Stiggz is jumping back into the rap game and is ready to make a splash. After taking a temporary break from crafting music, Stiggz hops back into his music career with the album ‘The Hiatus.’ Originally born in Nigeria, Stiggz shows off his musical diversity throughout the eight-track album.
Perhaps the most emotionally-charged track on the album is ‘Guinness,’ produced by T. Williams. The transparent song takes a deep dive into some of Stiggz’s past trauma. Inspired by his daughter Maya’s death in 2015, Stiggz describes the pain resulting from such a significant loss.
The song features a slow-moving rhythm centered around calming piano chords. To make the beat even more emotional, a dull bass pumps in the backdrop. Stiggz’s lyrics and tone of voice match the cadence and overall feel of the depressing mood the track brings. Throughout the entire song, Stiggz remains candid about the past trauma he’s experienced.
Another part of his return to the rap game includes releasing a music video for the track ‘The Edge.’ ‘The Edge’ is a creatively structured video that’s now streaming on Youtube. As soon as the song starts, it’s easy to tell the beat is unconventional. As horns pair with a gentle piano solo, Stiggz raps aggressively about his feelings tied to his music career. We had the chance to ask Stiggz what inspired the intensity heard in ‘The Edge.’
‘The Edge’ was inspired by my frustration of the game and feeling like I was peering in from a distance. – Stiggz
Throughout the song, Stiggz raps lyrics with profound meaning packed with a heartfelt emotional connection. Because of his innate ability to convey his emotions, the listener can easily sense his frustration and passion.
Stiggz is no stranger to the music game. From the age of 17, Stiggz has experienced various ups and downs in his career. Some of his career highs include performing at Sonar in Barcelona and Ashton Court Festival in Bristol. Additionally, Stiggz has also had a song featured in a documentary film. Despite the accolades, Stiggz still felt it was best to take a temporary step back from music.
The musician’s stage name draws inspiration from his quiet personality. He initially referred to himself as Stealth MC because of the discrete, lowkey nature he maintains. The artist’s friends referred to him as Stiggz for short, and after his hiatus from music, returning as Stiggz just felt right.
Stiggz isn’t planning on slowing down any time soon. In the future, he is striving to drop more fire tracks, enticing music videos, and increase exposure in the hip-hop community.
