Tagg OTB | ‘Like This’, Highly Favorable
Sacramento based recording artist, Tagg OTB, is setting the bar high with his recent single “Like This.” The multi-faceted music aficionado is a man of many talents. Tagg does it all. He writes, sings, raps, records, mixes, and masters his music, among other things, all at his own studio in his home town. Tagg mixes catchy wordplay and delectable vocal melodies over fragrant and refreshing production on this record that is bound to catch the attention of music lovers everywhere.
The track begins with chords that are lush and soothing. Instantaneously, this puts the record in a space that can easily send the listener into an enlightening trance. The minimalistic kick and snap pattern are sonically pleasing, and executed in a manner that leaves the perfect amount of room for the vocal to breathe. Tagg then comes in with cohesive lyricism and beautiful melodies, and bodies the track with elegance and grace. His utilization of stylistic choices, such as well-mixed in and out vocal dubs, as well as a slow hi-pass automation fade on the hook towards the end of the record, combines nicely to add appealing flavor to this easy-listening record. His verse lyricism and execution compliments the song structure nicely, and the hook really brings it home.
Rap Fiesta had a chance to ask Tagg a few questions about some of his influences and aspirations when it comes to his music career. When asked what inspired this song in particular, Tagg responded:
“…I made this song so I could start talking about how the relationship with my daughter’s mom didn’t work out so I could try and heal from it. At the time I made this song I was also homeless, sleeping in my car most nights so I just needed to vent…”
The more we got to know Tagg on a personal level, the more we gravitated towards him and enjoyed listening to his records. Understanding the inspiration behind this track in particular really allowed us to see the world through his lens, and gave some enlightening context that allowed us have a deeper connection with his music. Tagg went on to mention the impressive background that surrounds his music career:
“…I started playing drums in 3rd grade, so that was 20 years ago. I started producing at 17, so 10 years ago. All together I play drums, keys, sing, rap, produce, and engineer…”
Not many artists have the wherewithal to even attempt all of these different skill sets, much less execute them on the level that Tagg does. The culmination of all his many abilities has allowed him to cohesively synthesize his sound in a palatable and enjoyable manner. As listeners and fans, we at Rap Fiesta are definitely here for it. As for his next moves, Tagg went on to say:
“…I’m dropping the debut mixtape for an artist that I’m producing named Lil’ Suede. Also, [I’m] just continuing to work at my studio and produce tracks for more artists. I run a studio in Sacramento too… $20/hr for production, recording, and mixing/mastering…”
If you’re an artist based in the Sacramento area looking for any of these jobs for your own records, I’d think it’d be a great idea to give Tagg a ring. We at Rap Fiesta will definitely be on the lookout for Tagg in the future, as well as his collaborator Lil’ Suede, and are sure that big things lie ahead with their endeavors. It’s Tagg’s world, and we’re just living in it. Throw Tagg a like if you support the music and follow his handles to stay up to date on his past, present, and future moves.
