The i OF A GENiUS | “HiGHBEAM”
Uplifting the listen with an ambient, lo-fi backdrop, The i OF A GENiUS’ “HiGHBEAM (prod by Sunny)” explores mental battles, ‘tying the knot’ with ascending growth (or fighting against the current), and the endangerment behind smoking a spliff on route (solely because of police officers) In essence, the rapper uses oscillating flows and his signature rasp to relay this message to others.
Lyrics like these get to the gist of things: ”Growth come and talk a lot/Life go and tie a knot/Rope shine the lightest one/No lie when you see the sun,” and “Roll by fo police kill one/Ocean underneath my lungs/No funds couldn’t eat well done /More love when you teachin one/Grow up when your lease done keep it up /Open up mental reaching the broken stuff/Hold a gun love leaking till the roads are done.”
Towards the middle, “HiGHBEAM” is led by a wind percussion and lightly-knocking 808’s.
As “HiGHBEAM” closes off, the “SWIMMN” rapper reflects on carefree moments like ‘being stoned cold and hitting the bong.’ In the words of my friend, Anissa Gonzalez, who might I add hit the bulls-eye of the song’s meaning, “When you’re growing. It’s a lot of things being reiterated, but the way life does things, ingrains it. Hence ’tying the knot’ or in another stance would be a commitment to what growth has taught. It seems pretty psychedelic and raw.”
”HiGHBEAM” is the first single off of his upcoming E.P Thank You For Being You. Sunny, who is from the U.K, will be working on the production.
